Gobeille Tips For Having A Healthy Summer

Here is a list of 3 tips for having a healthy summer

1. Get Outside to Exercise
Pick an outdoor activity!  Try going on a hike, taking a nature walk, playing games – such as tag with your kids, cycling, roller-blading, or swimming — to shed that cooped-up feeling of gym workouts.  Because we live in Central Oregon, the outdoor activity list is almost limitless.  Have fun!  Remember, you only live once so enjoy life.

*Extra Tip: Exercising as a family – is a great way to create bonding time.
2. Be Good to Your Eyes
To protect your vision at work and at play, wear protective eyewear. When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles around the eyes.  The beautiful Central Oregon sun can be very damaging to your health if you don’t take proper preventive measures.   When playing sports or doing tasks such as mowing the lawn, wear protective eyewear.  Ask your eye doctor about the best type; some are sport-specific.
3. Have A Berry Boost
If you do one thing this summer to improve your diet, have a cup of mixed fresh berries — blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries.  Try this once a day. The berries will help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses. Blueberries and blackberries are especially antioxidant-rich.

*Extra Tip: Berries are also high in fiber, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers.

New Years Resolutions

It’s that time of year.  We all have at least given it some thought.  What will the new year bring?  At Gobeille Orthodontics we are ready to process some New Years Resolutions for our practice.
Common new years resolutions include:

Lose Weight
Volunteer to Help Others
Quit Smoking
Get a Better Education
Get a Better Job
Save Money
Get Fit
Eat Healthy Food
Manage Stress
Manage Debt
Take a Trip
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Drink Less Alcohol

These are all great goals to set and work on reaching.  As you process this, we think there are some factors that come into play.  Everyone who is consistently going to a gym knows that with January’s arrival comes droves of people joining work out facilities and hitting the machines.  Gym goers also know that by March most of these people will taper off their work out schedule and the gym again will be back down to the “regulars” and locals.  With that said, we propose you consider planning and executing realistic goals that can be achieved realistically.  Often times, when new years resolution goals are set and then not reached, it can leave you feeling worse than if you would not have made the goals in the first place.  We don’t say that to discourage you, only to suggest that it is wise to set realistic new years resolutions.  For example, if you are already over extended and involved in countless activities, be honest with yourself as to what you can ad to your plate.  If your new years resolutions include everything that is on the list above, consider tapering it down to what is most important to you.
It feels great to accomplish goals.  By setting realistic new years resolutions that you can achieve, you set yourself up to feel good […]

Gobeille Ortho’s Holiday “Braces Friendly” Recipe

Cranberry Glazed Turkey
Cooking for yourself or someone with braces can be somewhat of a challenge.  Gobeille Orthodontics will now offer an occasional recipe or two for you to use, pass along, or help to generate other similar ideas with for braces friendly dishes.  As with all cooking, just have fun and don’t be afraid to experiment in the kitchen with the flavors and spices that you like the best.  *Turkey can be substituted with chicken in this Cranberry Glazed dish.

You can always count on cranberries for color and a zesty zing of flavor.   For this recipe, Gobeille Orthodontics will use two forms of cranberries: dried berries and whole-berry sauce.

Gobeille Ortho’s Holiday “Braces Friendly” Recipe

Prepare the recipe in a glass baking dish, and you’ll be ready to have a braces friendly meal fit for a king or queen!  Here is all you will need:

1 ½ cups mixed rice (white, brown, wild), uncooked

2 cups chicken broth

1 (16-oz) can whole-berry cranberry sauce

¼ cup dried cranberries

1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 Tablespoon dried minced onion

2 cups of boned, cooked turkey pieces *or, 3 boneless chicken breast halves

¼ cup apple juice or cider

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for 1 hour (when using cooked turkey.) or 1 ¼ to 1 ½ hours for raw chicken

Here is how to prepare:
In a 9”x13” greased baking dish, stir together the dry rice, thyme, basil and onion. Mix in the chicken broth and dried cranberries.

Turkey: cut the cooked, boned turkey into chunks or strips. Lay the chicken or turkey over the rice in a single layer.

Chicken: cut the raw chicken breasts into strips about 2 inches by 3.5 inches; this helps the flavor and moisture get absorbed so […]

5 Holiday Season Health Tips

Here is Gobeille Orthodontics 5 Holiday Season Health Tips.  Food for thought, no pun intended.
1. Don’t worry, take a deep breath.  You more than likely won’t gain 10 to 15 pounds over the holiday season.
It is a common  misconception that you’ll need to go up a pant size after the Holidays are all said and done. The average person gains only about a single pound during the few weeks between Thanksgiving and January 1st.   This, of course, is no excuse to eat as though you are in a contest, however don’t let this old tale detour you from having fun and enjoying your family this season.
Interesting side note: A study published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology notes that people who had an attitude of forgiveness and self-compassion after one high-calorie setback were less likely to give up and keep binging.
In other words, if you lose control with a dish of chocolate covered sugar cookies, don’t think, I’ve blown it. Might as well move on to the upside down cake and eggnog. Just forgive yourself and keep your head up.

2. Try not to skip meals.
It seems like it would make sense: Forget about lunch; leave more room for snacking on finger foods at the office party later.  But arriving to the party starving will more than likely result in overeating.  Try and eat normally during the day, and be strategic at the buffet.  Your metabolism will thank you.  Fewer small meals throughout the day will help to quicken your metabolic rate and you will actually burn more fat and process your food much better.  Your body will thank you later.
3. Take a a break from the gym.
The fact is, the percentage […]

Becoming An Orthodontist

Becoming An Orthodontist
Orthodontia: is the study and treatment of malocclusions due to irregular tooth positions and/or adverse jaw growth.
Orthodontic Specialists by definition are professionals who have studied the art and science of orthodontia.   Orthodontia is a Greek word, “Orthos” means proper or straight, and ”odous” means tooth.
To be an Orthodotist, you must first attend college  to earn the proper degrees.   A future Orthodontist will need to obtain a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) -  or a Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD).  After this degree is earned, the dentist then applies to an orthodontic graduate program and obtains a Masters of Science (MS) degree in orthodontics.  Every Orthodontic Specialist must first go through dentistry school to become a dentist.
So, that is the logistics of becoming an Orthodontist.  With that said, there are many other variables to consider when you are thinking about becoming an Orthodontist.  We believe Orthodontia is one of the most rewarding jobs there is and helps change peoples futures for the better.  We correct jawlines, teeth and smiles that give our patients confidence to face the world in a way many never thought was possible.  Also, our younger patients are provided with medial care that helps to shape their lives and gives them a head start in the world without having to feel bashful or embarrassed of their teeth and smile. 4 Tips For Orthodontic Patients

Getting braces on is exciting!  It means that you have taken an important step towards making your future better.   After getting your braces on, it is crucial to understand how to take care of your teeth in order to ensure that your braces are doing their job.  We look at orthodontic treatment as a partnership, and your roll is an important one.  To help you with the process, we have provided you with five tips you need to know in order to have a successful treatment as an orthodontic patient.

4 Tips For Orthodontic Patients:

Brushing Well
Your teeth and appliances should be brushed well after every meal and before bedtime using fluoride toothpaste with gentle, even, soft strokes.  Take your time.  Good brushing habits will pay dividends in the end of your treatment not to mention this will help you develop an excellent life skill that will enhance your overall health.

Flossing Well
Flossing after every meal will help you clean areas between your teeth – especially areas and places your toothbrush can miss. If you cannot floss after each meal due to circumstances, we highly recommend flossing twice a day at the very least.

Eat Brace-Friendly Foods
Now that you have braces and are undergoing treatment, there are certain foods you need to avoid.  For example, foods that are hard, sticky, chewy or sour can add months to your treatment time. Foods to avoid include gum, taco shells, nuts, ice, chips, caramels or hard candies.  If it can stick to your braces – or are hard enough to brake brackets, safe to say these are foods to avoid.

Assessing Your Braces
In the event your appliances are damaged, we ask that you call our team at Gobeille Orthodontics immediately to […]

Orthodontics and Bethany Hamilton

Orthodontics is the first specialty field  of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions – which, in simple terms, are  improper bites.  This can be a result of disproportionate jaw relationships, tooth irregularity, or sometimes both.

Bethany’s name  is synonymous with inspiration. As a young teen in 2003 while enjoying being one the young Champions of surfing, she was attacked by a shark.  She lost her arm in the attack and barely survived.  She has since gone on to inspire millions due to her amazing determination and attitude. As many know, her story is a bestselling autobiography Soul Surfer which in April 2011 was released as a major motion picture blockbuster.  Once healed, Bethany continues to compete in the World Professional Surfing Tour and also tours the world sharing her story of triumph,  proving that with faith and belief anything is possible.

The shark attack took a toll on her confidence and self esteem.  When asked, Bethany will tell you that

”after being treated with Damon Braces I couldn’t be happier. The results of having braces not only improved my smile, it boosted my confidence.”
Bethany now is able to smile through adversity.  This in not only an amazing testament to the Damon System that we use here at Gobeille Orthodontics, it also speaks volumes to the importance of feeling good about yourself and having confidence, even when faced with adversity.
Bethany Hamilton is a true American hero and we are proud to use the same braces that were instrumental in her life.   Some of you have seem the life sized card board  cut out of Bethany in our office waiting area.  This is the least we could do to pay tribute to an amazing young lady who is a true […]
